The weird thing about all the conspicuous consumption is I don't think they are getting that much bang for their buck anyway. At least happiness studies seem to show that once you get to a certain level of income there is a diminishing return on how much happiness you can buy, and perhaps trying to make more money might even work against being happy, given that it probably takes time away from things that the person might actually like doing.
Which I think is why the rich are so busy trying to inflict misery on everyone else.
